Scientific Initiation
The Program
The Scientific Initiation Program was created in 2013 and is part of the pathway for training new researchers at Hospital Sírio-Libanês. It is a free program open to students regularly enrolled in undergraduate courses at public or private higher education institutions. The program provides undergraduate students with an understanding of the scientific method and fundamental concepts for knowledge production through the development of a research project under the guidance of a faculty member from our Stricto Sensu Graduate Program.
The program encourages greater integration between undergraduate and graduate studies, as well as the involvement of clinical and care staff in research activities and human resource training in the health field. We conduct research in three major areas of concentration: applied research in surgery and regenerative medicine, applied research in intensive care medicine and rehabilitation, and applied research in oncology. The program's strengths include its interdisciplinary nature, the availability of a comprehensive infrastructure, exposure to a clinical care environment, and the opportunity to interact with highly qualified professionals.

Admission Process
To join the Scientific Initiation Program, candidates must identify an area of concentration that interests them, find a faculty member who works in that area, and check their availability to supervise the development of a research project. The admission of new students occurs on a rolling basis upon the submission of an acceptance letter from the supervisor, a research project proposal, and personal documents to the Academic Secretariat of the Sírio-Libanês Institute for Education and Research – Researcher Training Programs Sector. After the selection and definition of the research project, the scientific initiation student gains access to the necessary facilities at the Hospital and the Institute for Education and Research to develop their project. Students are evaluated annually by a committee composed of researchers from the Institution and external researchers. The evaluation consists of presenting the research project and the results obtained to the evaluation committee. The student's academic performance is also evaluated through their academic transcript, participation in events, and the preparation of scientific articles.
Scholarships
The Scientific Initiation Program can be done on a voluntary basis, without receiving a research scholarship. However, there are several scholarship options available from different sources. Our institution currently has 10 scholarships granted by the CNPq through the PIBIC program. Calls for scholarship selection open at the beginning of each academic semester, depending on the number of available scholarships. Additionally, the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) reviews applications for Scientific Initiation scholarships on a rolling basis, and the student and their supervisor can submit the scholarship application directly through FAPESP's SAGE system.
